A Personal Invitation to Those Holding Space for Readers Everywhere.
Dear Independent Bookstores, Friends,
First, I am simply moved to say thank you.
We deeply appreciate everything you are doing to keep books, ideas, independent voices, and the joy of discovery alive within our communities.
In a world where so much of what we encounter is increasingly determined by algorithms, screens, enormous corporations, and what someone somewhere believes will capture our attention, there is something wonderfully human about walking into an independent bookstore.
We can wander. We can discover. We can dream.
We can pick up a book we had never heard of, open it to a page we never expected to read, and perhaps encounter an idea that changes something within us.
And there are still human beings there.
People who read books. People who love books. People who recommend books. People who know their communities and understand that the value of a book cannot always be measured by how many copies it is expected to sell.
We appreciate you for preserving that.
Independent bookstores provide far more than shelves upon which books can be displayed. You create spaces where curiosity, imagination, conversation, education, questioning, creativity, and human connection can be nourished.
You also provide something especially meaningful to independent authors, publishers, thinkers, and movements whose voices may never arrive with enormous advertising budgets or national publicity campaigns.
You give new ideas a place to be discovered.
As a humble independent movement ourselves, Peace President United understands something about bringing ideas into the world without the machinery of a large institution behind us. We believe meaningful change often begins quietly, with one person encountering an idea, questioning something previously taken for granted, sharing a conversation, or passing a book to another human being.
Perhaps that is one of the sacred possibilities books have always carried. A book does not need to change the entire world. Sometimes it changes one person’s world. And that person may influence a family, a classroom, a community, an organization, or another person they may never have otherwise reached.
This is why we believe independent bookstores continue to matter so deeply.
Because you keep these sacred places part of our world where life-changing encounters can happen.
So whether or not you ever carry a Peace President book, recommend one of our titles, or participate in anything we are creating, please know that this letter comes first and foremost as an expression of genuine appreciation.
Thank you for opening your doors. Thank you for supporting writers and readers. Thank you for making room for independent voices and unfamiliar ideas.
Thank you for creating places where people can still wander among books and discover something they did not know they were looking for.
And thank you for whatever part you are playing in keeping the extraordinary relationship between books, ideas, and human beings alive.
